Washington House Inn

Washington House Inn

The perfect spot for a nice weekend getaway from Chicago is located only about an hour and a half north of Chi-town. The Washington House Inn is located right in the middle of Cedarburg, WI. I have stayed here on three different occasions.

The hospitality has always been great each time we visit. The first time was in August 2009 to celebrate the end of the summer. We stayed in the Fred Ashe room complete with a lovely fireplace in the corner and windows overlooking the main street.

A king size bed and a large whirlpool tub and shower in the corner completed the room. That first night’s stay, I did not get a good night’s sleep due to an uncomfortable bed. However, since that time they have replaced all the mattresses and bought new sheets. The second time I stayed there in February 2010 was one of the best night’s sleep I have ever had. So much so, that I rifled through the pillowcase the next morning in search for the brand name of the sheets. I have since bought my own set so I can wake up in that luxury every morning. (Comphy Co. sheets)

My second stay there was in the Gerhard Wurthmann room. It had a king size bed, stone walls, wood floors and a nice little sitting area. There is also a whirlpool tub in the bathroom to relax in.

A lovely touch is the wine and cheese hour every day from 5 – 6 p.m. featuring wines from the town’s own Cedar Creek Winery. If it’s very busy there, like my third visit recently, you might need to push your social boundaries and * gasp * share a table with someone. Luckily, the table I chose with my boyfriend was occupied by a cute, slightly older couple celebrating their wedding anniversary. Who also humorously bribed their daughter with cash to go spend the weekend with her aunt so they could have some much needed alone time. You’re also not limited to one glass of wine as they just keep unloading them from the adjacent kitchen. So watch your intake, but enjoy nevertheless!

Because you won’t want to miss dinner in town, whether you’re looking to grab a pizza or have a nice sit down meal, Cederburg can accommodate your needs. We watched the 2010 Winter Olympics and the famous Canadian vs. American men’s hockey teams battle in the finals at a nice pizza restaurant around the corner from the Rivoli movie theatre. They have a quiet seating area in the back with TVs.

To celebrate our four-year anniversary and my birthday, we went to the Anvil Pub & Grill at the north end of town to have a nice sit down meal with reasonable prices. They don’t take reservations, so be prepared to wait a little bit if you haven’t timed your arrival perfectly. We entertained ourselves at the bar with a stack of playing cards they provided.

If dessert and coffee is more your taste, there’s plenty of that to go around. Amy’s Candy Kitchen lines their windows with some of the biggest taffy apples I’ve ever seen. The peanut one is delicious with the right amount of salty and sweet, and big enough to split (sliced) with more than two people.

But for breakfast, make sure to stay at the Washington House Inn as they serve breakfast daily from 7 a.m. – 10 a.m. They set breakfast up buffet style serving, the last three times we visited, some sort of egg soufflé with meat that always makes you want to go back for more. They will also serve pastries and fruit and will have cereal set up for the nonadventurous folk. You’ll have your choice of coffee, tea, hot chocolate and juice. Again if it’s busy, you might find yourself sharing a table with other guests.

Checkout is at 11 a.m. and you’ll hopefully leave refreshed and relaxed!

Great mural in town

I believe we have been here 5 times now and have enjoyed each of them. The area is great, with little cafes and shops on the downtown strip. There is also a great theatre right next to the Inn which we recommend. The wine and cheese hour is the best!
